Fadhli Ariffin

Fadhli Ariffin (b. 1989, Perak Malaysia) is a multidisciplinary artist born in Taiping, Perak. He earned a bachelor’s degree in printmaking at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), in 2013. Fadhli’s practice spans across various media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, woodcut, and lithograph prints. Fadhli’s most recent body of work, ‘Frekuensi’ surfaces from his struggles finding sustenance and purpose as an artist confined to his studio in Hulu Langat during a strict lockdown. He used bamboo sticks in lieu of paintbrushes, using darker tones of textured and repetitive patterns that pulse and vibrate; the imagery reminiscent of vinyl grooves luring us into the soundwaves of Pali’s search for his internal wavelength.

He celebrates artistic freedom and expression, as he embraces and reverberates on his chosen frequency that immerses his audience in a bright and coloristic visual feast. The defiance of conventional color patterns brings with it a strange harmony that absorbs us into a space between stability and chaos.

Fadhli’s career began through the HOM ART Trans Residency program, where he had his first solo show, titled (P)residen (2015). He then participated in a number of groups exhibitions and art fairs in Malaysia and India before his second solo exhibition at Rissim Contemporary, titled Peristiwa Di Awangan (2021). Fadhli Ariffin had a solo booth at KL ArtExpo (2022) for his Frekuensi series which sold-out on preview night. He is one of 5 members of Chetak 17, a print-making collective founded by Bayu Utomo, Samsudin Wahab, Faizal Suhaif. His artwork explores his surroundings, thoughts, and feelings towards the identity of an artist.
