Galeri Sasha is pleased to present Inbetween Worlds, the fifth solo exhibition by Malaysian artist Faizal Yunus. This series of 17 paintings, which was produced over the period of a year, marks a bold departure in both concept and process from his previous work. Inbetween Worlds explores the tension between the rural landscapes of Faizal’s childhood in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, and the industrial urbanism of his current life in Selangor.
Faizal Yunus’ work is distinguished by his use of airbrush and automotive paint, techniques honed during his years in automobile shops. Known for his hyper-realistic textures within a dream-like haze, the artist combines technical precision with a raw, process-driven approach. In this exhibition, he channels memories of nature, merging them with the gritty materiality of industrialism. His paintings begin with spontaneous paint pouring, followed by meticulously masked outlines and airbrushed backdrops of theatrical evening skies. Landscapes emerge, blending fantasy with memory in the portrayal of trees, waterfalls, and rugged hills.
The juxtaposition of these elements embodies Faizal’s journey through both physical and psychological spaces. “Inbetween Worlds” delves into the complexities of straddling two environments—serene, untouched greenery and the mechanical, industrialised world. The industrial tools and materials play a pivotal role, infusing his canvases with tactile depth and texture.
At its core, Inbetween Worlds is an exploration of place and Faizal's personal evolution as an artist. His style has shifted from abstraction to a balance of realism and surrealism, mirroring his journey towards equilibrium. Each work carries a poetic title, inviting viewers to explore the emotional narratives embedded within, offering a meditation on the transitions that shape his life.
